Failure to educate employees about workplace substance abuse will leave your organization at risk of financial loss from dozens of potential hazards associated with substance abusing employees. Although training of supervisors may be required by a state or federal agency that regulates safety sensitive positions, your employees and their behaviors are where the true risk lies.

Educating employees about substance abuse accomplishes several important objectives:

1) Employees are educated about workplace substance abuse and its impact so they can become aware of their personal responsibility for seeking help for drug addiction or alcoholism. Employees without substance abuse problems also will more likely stop enabling their coworkers.

2) The myths and misconceptions about substance abuse are shattered by effective training. This makes those employees who are affected by drug abuse or addiction become amenable to seeking help in the event of an incident or crisis linked to their substance use.

3) Self-referral. Effective education will motivate some employees to seek help on their own, quietly, and effectively. You will never know who they are, but it will happen. It is a complete myth that employees do not self-refer. Anyone who has worked in a detox unit in a hospital has seen employee walk through the door prompted by an incident, close call, new education and awareness, or fear. People see treatment for illnesses of all kinds for the same reasons. These are self-referrals.

4) Some employees in control of drug and alcohol use (who are not addicted, but just irresponsible) will stop allowing substance use to interfere with their jobs. Frequently these are younger workers.

There are other reasons to educate employees about workplace substance abuse. One is empowering employees with alcoholic or drug addicted family members to take action--effective action to intervene. Of course, part of training should be distributing your drug-free workplace policy, which puts employees on notice about the organization's position on zero tolerance for maintaining a substance abuse problem.

Some organizations think training supervisors is enough. If they don't see evidence of a substance abuse problem among employees, then they believe training of employees in drug and alcohol awareness is not that important. Here is what substance abuse and addiction with employees looks like in the workplace: absenteeism on Mondays, Fridays and the day after payday; stolen tools; tardiness; a prolonged absence after a back injury; and sleeping on the job that you never see. And there are over 60 other possible signs and symptoms. (We'll give you a list you can reproduce and distribute.)

You are not helpless to make an impact on these problems, but workplace substance abuse and employees with drug and alcohol addictions are at the root of many costly impacts on the business organization. It will be rare to actually see a drug or intoxicated employee.

Educate employees about drug and alcohol abuse to increase their awareness, reinforce drug abuse prevention efforts in your organization, and encourage them to seek confidential help for a substance use disorder to reduce risk to your organization. Education is going potentially save lives. You may agree that this one reason is good enough to educate employees. We think it is. Of course, you will never prove that someone's life was saved or death was prevented because you were proactive in offering drug and alcohol awareness training for employees.

This program allows you to reach all employees because we have any format you need to do it. We recommend the Web course. You own it. It's a one time cost. No license renewal. No additional fees. It's yours forever and it runs offer your own server. It uploads in minutes. It has handouts and test questions and a certificate of completion. (We recommend going to your property casualty insurance provider and arguing for a 5% discount off your premium. This was standard practice years ago because the cost savings on workers' compensation is measurable.) Be sure to asking your provider.

This training in employee drug and alcohol awareness helps workers consider self-referral to an employee assistance program if you have one, increase the likelihood of an employee not coming to work under the influence, encourage help-seeking behaviors among employees, reduce or stop enabling, dispel myths about alcohol abuse and alcoholism, and allow employees who are parents of teenagers to be armed with information necessary to be more influential in intervening with child, teen, or college student in trouble with substance abuse.

This drug alcohol education and awareness program available in PowerPoint, DVD, Video, or Web Course starts off with awareness questions to get the ball rolling and a discussion follows concerning the answers to those questions. It engages employees and does not gloss over alcohol abuse, which is the most serious substance of abuse affecting the workplace. This drug and alcohol training will also help employees to consider their own drinking or drug use patterns. The idea here is help employees consider the next step for themselves, a spouse, or teenager with a substance abuse problem.

If you are training supervisors in drug and alcohol abuse or DOT Supervisor Training, why would you ever ignore employees?

The alcohol awareness section in this program is particularly powerful because it is, and probably always will be the most costly substance of abuse.

This program hits all the major drug categories, discusses enabling, and presents content on the family's role.

A complete frame-by-frame instructor's manual with notes is included. This manual keeps you on target in this presentation if you choose to give it live, but it is not necessary. All formats have professional narration. You can do a short presentation with this package or comeback and deliver more content in subsequent meetings. Our fact sheets are included at no additional cost, and with the web course, the substance abuse tip sheets sheets are embedded!
